Malakai
Liver cancer. Transplant.
Malakai was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2019. He endured months of chemotherapy and surgery before receiving a life-saving liver transplant. Due to Malakai’s particular type of cancer and his age, much of the research to prevent side effects from the chemotherapy he was given has not been studied and tested. Malakai had perfect hearing prior to treatment. He now has permanent hearing loss and requires hearing aids. He continues to suffer from neuropathy, another long term side effects of chemo. Malakai will forever need to be monitored by a cardiologist due to a particular chemo that targets the heart as it tries to kill the cancer. This same chemo has also limited him from certain physical activities. In addition, Malakai’s immune system is permanently compromised due to the chemotherapy treatments. There will continue to be long term side effects that he will discover as he ages.
Zuza
AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia)
Zuza was first diagnosed when she was 3 years old. She underwent years of chemotherapy and 3 bone marrow transplants in an attempt to overcome and subdue a very aggressive blood cancer. As a teenager, Zuza began documenting her cancer journey on social media. She became a star, amassing over 2 million followers who fell in love with her positive message while enduring a terrible disease.
Zuza passed away in September of 2025, shortly after her 14th birthday.
We remember and honor her with the RESILIENCE HOODIE, a project Not Today Cancer began working on with her over the summer of 2025 to raise money for pediatric cancer research. We hope she is proud of how it turned out.
